This update represents violence in Nigeria and related to Boko Haram in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger from May 13 to May 19, 2023. 
The map depicts deaths by state. Borno State, in Nigeria's North East, is the epicenter of Boko Haram-related violence, which has also spilled into neighboring Adamawa and Yobe states, among others.

 Below is a visualization and description of some of the most significant incidents of political violence in Nigeria from May 13 to May 19, 2023. This update also represents violence related to Boko Haram in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. These incidents are included in the Nigeria Security Tracker.

 

 

  • May 13: Communal violence led to six deaths in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) and three deaths in Apa LGA in Benue.
  • May 14: An Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) Improvised Explosive Device (IED) killed three soldiers in Abadam, Borno. 
  • May 14: Bandits killed eighteen in Maru, Zamfara. 
  • May 14: Kidnappers abducted fifteen in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory (FCT). 
  • May 15: Kidnappers abducted "several" (est. at ten) in Ikere, Ekiti. 
    May 16: Bandits killed eighty-seven in Mangu, Plateau. 
  • May 16: Gunmen killed two police officers and five others while also kidnapping two during an attack on a U.S. convoy in Ogbaru, Anambra. 
  • May 16: Kidnappers killed one and abducted three in Isin, Kwara. 
  • May 16: Kidnappers abducted "some" (est. at five) National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Emuoha, Rivers. 
  • May 16: Gunmen killed four in Toto, Nassarawa. 
  • May 17: Kidnappers killed two and abducted six in Kwali, FCT. 
  • May 17: Troops killed "several" (est. at ten) bandits in Shinkafi, Zamfara. 
  • May 18: Gunmen killed five in Orumba North, Anambra. 
  • May 18: Kidnappers abducted two in Ika South, Delta. 
  • May 19: Police officers killed two kidnappers in Etche, Delta.
